Christ the Bridegroom
Previous: The Christ Main Carvings Gallery Next: How to Order

This is of course carved out of one piece of wood, it's just that the darker parts are stained while the lighter aren't. I carved this for a young woman who was born blind and yet shows more enthusiasm for life than most people I've met. She has a beautiful voice and is currently studying chanting in Ireland.

The words around the "frame" are (starting in the lower left corner) Behold the Bridegroom cometh in the middle of the night and blessed is the servant whom He shall find watching, which is the beginning of the troparion (hymn) that is sung during the Bridegroom service.

I took a chance and carved the word Ephphatha in Braille on the back of the icon. Fortunately she liked it :)
